KUCHING: The problems of river pollution and stench from commercial-scale pig farming activities in Kuching, Sarian and Samarahan can be overcome when the breeders relocate their operations to the 800-hectare integrated, environment-friendly pig-breeding centre, near Balai Ringin in Samarahan. State Environment Assistant Minister Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie said the centre, located far away from towns areas and human settlements, was equipped with good infrastructure including an effluent treatment system and a bio-gas plant to treat the pig faeces.

"The state government is concerned about the pollution of rivers due to pig-farming activities such as in the Jalan Kuching-Serian area and several areas in Samarahan and that is why we have set up the integrated pig breeding centre in Sibutik, near Balai Ringin," he said after the launching of the Chief Minister Environment Award, here, Friday.

The centre can accommodate about 250,000 pigs at any one time.

State Environment Quality controller Peter Sawal said response to the integrated pig breeding centre had been good and more commercial-scale breeders were expected to relocate there to overcome the pollution and stench problems.

On Environmental Impact Assessment, he said all major and mega projects which had an impact on the environment would be closely monitored by the state Natural Resource and Environment Board.

Sawal said to ensure that the developer of a project adhere to the environmental control regulations, his officers would visit the project at least once every three months. - BERNAMA
